We're called the Classic GenerationsWe're Valerie and Brian Wansink. We're a daughter-father music duo, who perform in retirement homes in the Ithaca, NY area. Having a younger person as the focus of the entertainment -- Valerie is 14 years old -- gives this a different type of appeal because it is not commonly seen.
We're called Classic Generations for two reasons. First, we represent two generations of our family. Second, we play many different generations of music -- classical, Big Band standards, Disney, country, and upbeat Rock n Roll. Our performances average 45-60 minutes, and we play these classic and contemporary songs on either the flute, piano, or saxophone, or we sing them. Or we do both. My parents (Valerie's grandparents) were from the Midwest and they each spent their last years in nursing homes. Having light-hearted entertainment was something that they looked forward to. Interestingly, some of these entertainers we saw really made the afternoon uniquely special. You could see that they were as enriched by performing there as were the residents. Our goal is to provide this type of experience. An experience that is light-hearted and fun, but with is also enriching to the residents, to the staff, and therefore to ourselves. |
